Fences serve a variety of purposes. They can be latticed as a simple boundary between areas or as a support for roses or other plants, or they can be closed to protect one from the elements or to act as a barrier for privacy. Fences can also come in a variety of materials depending on their use. The majority of fences are built from planks of wood, and are probably the most attractive and natural looking. Other fences may come in materials made from cement or corrugated sheet-metal, and these more effectively withstand the elements. These are usually erected in a lattice or zigzag pattern to better withstand the force of the wind.

Post-and-rail fences are constructed from posts placed at 10 foot intervals, with 11 foot long tapered rails inserted into the posts. Hurdle fences have a braced frame with split rails along its length, with the end pieces from each panel making up the posts.

Picket fences, most commonly painted white, have posts spaced anywhere from 8 to 12 feet apart, with 3x4 inch rails and pickets two to three inches wide. Natural Fibers - The Beginning of Textiles

When early humankind needed warmth and protection for their bodies, what did they use? Animal hides, grasses, bark and other plant material fashioned into crude garments most likely. When was it discovered that fibers from plants and animals could be fashioned into something much more flexible, versatile, and attractive? When was cloth invented? There is much scientific and archaeological inquiry devoted to trying to answer that question. As for the fibers themselves? There are four main types of natural fibers used in the creation of fabric and textiles; flax, cotton, wool and silk.

Most historians are in agreement that the first fiber used for the making of textiles came from the flax plant. The fibers in the stem of the plant are removed, cleaned, and woven together to make linen. Flax fibers were use to make linen over 5,000 years ago, and was of such value that it was used for burial shrouds for Egyptian Pharaohs. The Egyptians mastered the art of making fine linen, as some linen items found in tombs have threads so fine that they were woven 200 to the inch.

Wool has unique properties of water repelling and water absorption that no man made fiber has been able to duplicate. Wool remains a versatile and much-used fiber for all kinds of apparel and other applications.

The beginnings of silk is wrapped in the legend of The Goddess of Silk, the wife of the mythical Yellow Emperor of China, who is credited for introducing silk to China over 5,000 years ago. Silk is derived from the cocoon of a specific type of worm, and the documented evidence of an unearthed silkworm cocoon found in Northern China dates to around 2600 B.C.E. The cocoon of the silkworm consists of one continuous filament that can be 1,800 to 2,700 feet long. This filament is carefully unraveled from the cocoon and placed on a spool. A number of these filaments (usually five to eight) are spun together to create a single silk thread. The silk thread is then woven into textiles. Clothing made from silk has the ability to be warm in cool weather, and cool in hot weather.

The historically recent creation of man-made fibers has not eliminated the use of natural ones. Natural fibers have qualities that have not been duplicated. After more than 5000 years, humans still want and enjoy the warmth of wool, the feel of cotton, the characteristics of linen and the beauty of silk.

You have seen the television footage -- flood victims wading through water, kids jumping into flood water to cool off, and floating debris rushing downstream. Flood water contains visible and hidden dangers. What are they?

1. Fast current. Minneapolis MN, on its Web site, says just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you off your feet. Two feet of fast-moving water can sweep cars away. The current may be moving faster than it appears. Young children, the elderly, and the disabled are vulnerable to fast-moving current.

2. Toxic chemicals. The chemicals in flood water depend on location. In agricultural areas the water may contain animal feces, fertilizer, and pesticides. According to the CDC, flood water may also contain battery acid. OSHA reports that flood water may also contain gasoline, overflows from toxic waste sites, and manufacturing chemicals.

3. Dead and live animals. Flood water kills livestock -- cows, pigs, sheep, poultry -- and family pets. The dark, murky water my also contain live snakes and rats which are dangerous to humans.

4. Electrical hazards. According to OSHA, flood water may be charged with electricity from underground or downed power lines. Victims should not return to their homes until the electricity is turned off.

6. Dangerous debris. Rushing flood water may contain railroad ties, trees, tree branches, home propane tanks, gas grill tanks, furniture, children's play sets/toys, and even houses. This heavy debris can cause serious injuries.

7. Infectious organisms. The U.S. Dept. of Labor says flood water may contain E. Coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Hepatitis A Virus, and Typhoid. Flood water also attracts mosquitoes. "Pools of standing water become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of West Nile Virus and encephalitis," according to West Virginia University Extension Service.

Though most floods don't cause serious outbreaks of disease, it is best to be prepared. These tips will help you guard against flood water dangers.

* Get a tetanus shot or booster.

* Wear rubber waders and gloves.

* Protect your eyes with goggles and your lungs with a face mask.

* Use insect repellent.

* Cover your arms and legs.

* Drink bottled water from safe bottling plants.

* If no safe water is available, disinfect water with a solution of five drops of household bleach to one gallon of water.

* Rinse water storage containers with bleach solution.

* Wash hands with disinfected water and soap.

* Clean open sores and cuts with alcohol.

* Discard all contaminated food, including dented cans.
