Beech Hardwood Lumber

There are so many options when it comes to domestic hardwood lumber. One common hardwood is Beech wood. Beech (also known as Fagus Grandifolia) is taken from the American Beech tree. This tree grows in Eastern North America and Europe. It can reach a height of 120 feet with a diameter of almost 4 feet. The tree bark is thin, smooth, and gray to blue gray in color. Beech heartwood is dark to light reddish-brown, and its sapwood is white with a reddish shade. The grain of Beech is straight, sometimes interlocking, and is uniform in texture. It is also slightly coarse with visible rays and tiny pores.

Beech is a relatively hard wood, with a Janka hardness of 1300. It has great qualities that make it easy for woodworkers to use. Due to its stiffness, it has high crush strength and high resistance to shock. Its durability gives Beech great bending characteristics and gluing properties. Beech wood is versatile and can easily be treated with preservatives, like oils and stains. It can be stained to match other hardwoods, and a good finish can be obtained. Beech has good workability and works well with power equipment. However, it is sometimes hard to nail because it has a tendency to split. When done correctly it holds nails and screws very well. One flaw is that it is prone to insect attack, like furniture beetles.

Tom Elberson, a hardwood lumber salesman at Advantage Trim & Lumber Co., is very familiar with handling and preparing the Beech wood before it is used for various wood projects. He suggests that since Beech wood is a fairly hard wood, using very sharp blades is ideal for sawing and routing. He also recommends being familiar with the nailing properties of Beech wood because it does pose some problems if done incorrectly. Being aware of these properties can help you when you decide to use Beech wood in your next project.

Beech is a great wood to use for a variety of projects. Beech is commonly used for food containers and butcher blocks because it has no taste or odor. It is also popular for fuel wood because it is highly dense and has good burning qualities. It is the main wood used in the manufacture of clothes pins. It is also used for cabinet making, chairs, flooring, tool handles, plywood, veneers, trim, baskets, and turnery.

Domestic hardwood lumber offers such great beauty and quality. In particular, Beech wood has the characteristics you look for in wood that make it the perfect choice for any project.
