Building and Furnishing a Cat Kennel

A cat kennel can be a way to let your cat enjoy the outdoors without you having to worry about them roaming around the neighborhood. It is convenient to have a kennel for outdoor protection of your feline. Building a home-made kennel can save you money and is also very easy. Since cats are essentially gentler animals than other pets, you will only need light materials for a cat kennel.

Here is how to build your own cat kennel:

1. Buy and gather all the materials you will need in building a kennel. You are going to need the following tools and materials:

• 2x2" wooden posts about two feet in height
• Cement mixture
• Bricks or large stones
• Chicken wire
• Hinge assemblies and hinges
• Gate latch
• Wood screw
• Water
• Screw gun
• Shovel
• Pliers
• Wire cutter
• Tape measure

2. Measure the area in which you want to place the cat kennel and mark each area for the posts. Dig a hole around 1 foot deep and three inches wide for the corner poles and two more holes along the perimeter where the gate will be installed.

3. Prepare the cement mixture according to manufacturer's instructions. Pout cement on the holes before placing each pole and allow the cement to dry completely.

4. Wrap the chicken wire around each post until you have covered the whole perimeter. Secure the wire on the pole by twisting wire ties around the pole and chicken wire using pliers.

5. Since there will be small gaps at the bottom where your cat can crawl out, line the bottom part with bricks or large stones.

6. Screw two hinge assemblies on one of the gate posts. Make sure that the hinge assemblies are in line with gate that you are going to install. You would not want the gate to have a gap in the bottom since it will be hard to utilize a gate with bricks and stones at the bottom. Screw the hinges onto the gate with wood screws using a screw gun.

7. You can paint the kennel with vinyl paint if your wires are not vinyl coated. Let the paint completely dry off before placing your pet in it.

8. Slide the gate onto the gate post and attach the hinges to the hinge assemblies. Screw a latch on the gate which locks on to its latch partner attached to the other gate post.

9. Furnish the cat kennel with things that your cat needs. You can add climbing poles that can also double as a scratch pole. Place a make-shift cat bed using some plastic mats. You can add a spot for food and water supply and another spot for toys or other play structures that you might want to add.

10. You can cover the kennel with a tarp when it's too hot but most of the time, you would want your cat to soak up a little sunshine.
